Expected Value in Football Betting
Expected Value (EV) is the single most important concept in profitable betting. It tells you, on average, how much you’ll win or lose per unit staked over many bets.
The formula Or in a simpler form for decimal odds:
A worked example A team is priced at 2.20 to win. Implied probability is 1 / 2.20 = 45.5% . Our model estimates the true win probability is 52% . EV = 0.52 × 2.20 − 1 = +0.144 , or +14.4% per unit staked. That’s a value bet.
Why EV 0 is non-negotiable Negative-EV bets are guaranteed losers over time, no matter how lucky you get short-term. SmartMatchPick’s engines require EV 0 before a pick is shown — and we cap odds at 1.57 minimum to avoid low-payout traps.
EV vs accuracy A 75%-accurate tipster on −150 favourites is losing money . A 45%-accurate tipster on +200 underdogs is printing . Always check the EV, not the strike rate.
