Bankroll Management & Kelly Criterion
Even +EV bets lose if you stake too aggressively and go bust. Bankroll management is what separates profitable bettors from broke ones.
The Kelly Criterion The Kelly formula tells you the optimal fraction of your bankroll to stake: Or simpler: Where Edge = (Probability × Odds) − 1 .
A worked example Probability 55%, odds 2.10: - Edge = 0.55 × 2.10 − 1 = 0.155 (+15.5%) - Kelly % = 0.155 / 1.10 = 14.1% of bankroll
Why full Kelly is usually too much Full Kelly is mathematically optimal only if your probability estimates are perfect . They aren’t. Real-world drawdowns can hit 50%+ with full Kelly. We recommend Quarter Kelly — divide the Kelly % by 4. Still profitable, far less volatile.
SmartMatchPick’s approach Our portfolio manager implements Quarter-Kelly staking with built-in bankroll alerts at 1.5× expected drawdown. Stake suggestions are scaled by confidence (0.5× to 2.5× base) and capped at safe limits.
The 1% rule (alternative) If Kelly math feels heavy: never stake more than 1% of bankroll on a single bet. Boring. Effective. Survives losing streaks.
