Form vs xG in football prediction: which is more predictive?

Form (recent match results and goals scored) and xG (expected goals, based on shot quality) are two of the most commonly used inputs in AI football prediction. They answer different questions: form tells you what actually happened recently; xG tells you what the underlying process suggested should have happened. In prediction, xG is generally more predictive of future performance than raw form — but recent form captures momentum, morale, and tactical adjustments that xG misses. The best models blend both.
