Elo Ratings in Football
The Elo rating system was invented for chess, but it works beautifully for football. It assigns every team a single number that captures their current strength, and updates after every match.
The starting point All teams start at 1500 . After each match, ratings shift based on the result vs the expected result.
Expected score A 100-point Elo gap means the higher-rated team is expected to win 64% of the time.
Rating update - K is the learning rate (we use 32) - ActualScore = 1 (win), 0.5 (draw), 0 (loss)
Home advantage We add +50 Elo to the home team for the match to account for home advantage (it varies by league — see our league adjustments guide).
What Elo tells you - Elo gap 200 : heavy mismatch
Why we use Elo alongside Poisson Poisson tells you about goal-scoring patterns. Elo captures team strength independently of recent form noise. Combining them is more robust than either alone — see today’s predictions for live applications.
